Anecdata on PC vs. Apple

So I’m in line for an upgrade on my workstation at $EMPLOYER. It’s a negotiated company buy so definitely not retail. Yet the same spec’ed laptop at the Apple store comes in at $6.00 less than the PC laptop that could be coming my way.

So, yes, you can get cheap-ass PCs any day and twice on Sunday. However, when you’re buying workstation-quality PCs, Apple is way more competitive than it gets credit for. Either that or our purchasing department is horrible at negotiations.

Beer me, Marge

The new brew kettle has been ordered. The early Christmas present from the lovely Elizabeth was purchased earlier today as well. We won’t make a Christmas brew timeline, but I’m thinking a mid to late January First Round party is doable. I’m leaning Belgian White–but that’s because I drink the hell out of Blue Moon. Any suggestions / votes?

In other news, converting the garage into a neighborhood brewpub has jumped to the top of the to do list. Kind of funny that it wasn’t even on the to do list before yesterday afternoon. Reminds me of Grandpa Lehl’s basement bar, which was a totally awesome thing even to a 10 year old kid.

We do have to sort out yard implement storage and the like first…

Mac Rumors post generated drool

Assuming Apple doesn’t blast the prices on the Mac Pro given the current prices reflect 2006 prices for 2006 technology, I will soon need to re-evaluate my tolerance for buying on credit. I haven’t purchased a computer since January of 2006 and no PC tower of any sort since November of 2001. The drool-inducing factor of a Mac Pro able to address 16GB of RAM and 1+ TB of hard drive space, all with 4 – 8 processor cores and big improvements on the motherboard (look at that FSB!) is too much to resist. It’s the kind of machine that, if properly maintained and upgraded as time goes by, could prove useful for well into the next decade.

What could spark such a post?

FrogPad

Is is so wrong to want one? Because, even though I know they’re releasing a new version in late winter/early spring that addresses the symbol access issues faced by programmers and that it would likely reduce my typing speed, it just reeks of cool. Besides, it is theoretically better for preventing RSIs and also allows you to keep one hand on the mouse—theoretically making gains on not having to shift your mouse hand back and forth. Believe me, I’m heavily invested in talking myself in to one of these.

Kind of the same way I’ve been heavily invested in talking myself into a new MacPro workstation weighing in at ~$3K.

The irony (am I using this correctly, Alanis?) being that I really cannot afford either but the monthly contribution to my continued existence from my employer is due to arrive at the end of this week and is already burning a hole in my pocket. Also that they’re both due for a significant upgrade in the near term. Also that they’re both relatively useless upgrades from my current computing environment. Well, okay, the dual dual-core MacPro will beat the 450Mhz P3 into such a formless, bloody pulp without even breaking a sweat that the difference between the two CPUs seems entirely ridiculous. No, it’s beyond ridiculous. Ludicrous. The vast difference makes the upgrade seem a little too extravagant to be justified.

The point? Did I have a point other than to link to the current apple (pun!) of my geeky eye in an effort to make it seem more attainable? Is there any other point required? Inquiring minds want to know.
